Can Window Film Be Installed in Winter? Yes, and Here’s Why You Should

Yes, window film can be installed in winter. Professional installation is done on the interior surface of your glass, inside your heated home or building. The temperature outside does not affect the installation as long as the interior is at a normal comfortable temperature of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius.

This is a question we get every October as the weather turns in the GTA. Many homeowners assume window film is a summer-only service, but the reality is we install year-round. Here is what you need to know about winter installation.

Why Interior Temperature Is What Matters

Window film adhesive needs a minimum surface temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius to bond properly. Since installation happens on the inside of your glass in a heated building, this is almost never an issue. Your home is warm, the glass interior surface is warm enough, and the film bonds correctly.

The only situation where winter conditions create a problem is if the building is unheated, like an unoccupied construction site or an unheated warehouse. In those cases, we schedule installation after the heating system is running.

Cure Time Is Slightly Longer in Winter

Window film takes time to fully cure after installation. In summer, full cure typically takes 15 to 30 days. In winter, it can take 30 to 45 days because there is less solar energy hitting the glass to accelerate the curing process.

During the curing period, you may notice small water bubbles or a slightly hazy appearance. This is completely normal and disappears as the adhesive fully dries. Do not attempt to push bubbles out or clean the film during this period.

Winter Is Actually a Smart Time to Install

There are advantages to winter installation that most people do not consider. Wait times are shorter because demand is lower. You get the winter insulation benefit immediately. Your film is fully cured and performing at peak efficiency before the first heat wave in June. And you are protecting your interiors from UV damage during the winter months when sun angles are low but UV exposure through south-facing windows is still significant.

What About Installation on Very Cold Days?

On extremely cold days (minus 20 and below), the interior surface of glass can drop below the minimum bonding temperature even in a heated home, especially on single-pane windows or poorly insulated frames. In these rare cases, we may reschedule to a milder day. But for the vast majority of GTA winter days, installation proceeds normally.
