Describe the problem
Note where and when heat, glare or privacy becomes an issue. A west-facing living room, a boardroom partition and a ground-floor storefront each present a different brief. Take photographs that show the full window as well as the surrounding space.
Measure the glass
For a preliminary estimate, measure the visible glass rather than the frame. Width multiplied by height gives the area. A 3 ft by 4 ft pane is 12 sq ft. Keep separate measurements for surfaces receiving different products, and have the installer verify them before work is booked.
Confirm the specification
Ask about compatibility with your glazing, the visible appearance and applicable warranty terms. A price tier alone does not tell you how a particular shade will look or perform. Where protection is required, discuss whether a specified attachment system is part of the scope.
Understand the estimate
